FOREST LAND RESERVE

Editor,
Lake Cowichan Gazette

Dear Editor:

Hurrah! Mayor Jack Peake and the Town Council of Lake Cowichan are to be heartily commended for their recent resolution calling on the provincial government "to designate Forest Land Reserves on the forested private lands currently owned by forest companies to ensure that these valuable lands remain untouched by development."

Despite TimberWest's self-serving tantrums, the public interest is best served if working forest lands receive a similar kind of protection to that of provincial agricultural lands. Healthy working forest lands are simultaneously healthy working watershed lands that serve to nourish and sustain healthy communities. This proposal makes perfect economic and environmental sense.

Thank you for this progressive initiative. It deserves the full support of everyone in this community and beyond.

Sincerely,

Roger Wiles
