To the editor:
I'm hoping that the state of our old growth forests in BC and it's sustainability can be brought more into the public consciousness. The exporting of our raw logs from the coast of BC is now running at 11%.

The US lumber interests are pushing for market based pricing of our timber, and want us to have to compete for the access to our own logs, against their American dollar. The softwood lumber tariffs are designed to force us into a position where we have no other alternative. This is just one more step in the complete takeover of our Canadian resources and our sovereignty.

BC's coastal old growth timber is of the highest quality remaining in the world today.

Forest workers in BC have lost manufacturing jobs because of mill closures largely due to a lack of timber, while 11% of the coastal allowable annual cut (AAC) is being exported as raw logs.

There are lawsuits before the courts on behalf of workers who have lost their jobs, while forest companies continue to export logs from associated TFL's.

Under the Forest Act logs are not to be exported unless they are excess to our domestic needs.

Meanwhile the BC government signed an order in council to allow increased log exports from the Skeena region while mills there sit idle, and British Columbia manufacturing jobs are lost.

Why are our politicians not standing up for the people who elected them?
