Attention: CLCFC Board Chair, CLCFC Directors, Cowichan Community
Re: Membership Resignation
After lengthy deliberation, the executive directors
of the Youbou TimberLess Society (YTS), have unanimously voted to
resign from
membership with the Cowichan Lake Community Forest Co-operative
(CLCFC).
For over two years, the YTS has struggled to meaningfully
participate in making the CLCFC responsive to the needs of displaced
millworkers in this community. This ambition has proved to
be a fruitless and intractable task.
The YTS has agonized over this decision, but found
no way to reconcile our Society’s vision for the community
with the current CLCFC Board’s policies, make-up, and direction.
The YTS executive is convinced that our organization’s
limited resources and voluntary capacity will be more effectively
employed by focusing on other priority initiatives.
The YTS wishes the CLCFC well and hopes that benefits
derived from the Bolduc Forest Licence will one day percolate down
to the workers of this community who need fibre.
The Youbou TimberLess Society will continue to
represent the interests of displaced sawmill workers and forest-dependent
communities. Our goal is to promote co-operation with all
organizations and individuals who share this Society’s vision
of a truly community-accountable forestry model. We will continue
to pursue our vision of a community forest that is both ecologically
and economically sustainable — an ‘evergreen’
alternative.
Sincerely, Roger Wiles, Secretary, YTS
