Politicians will tell you there is a ban on
raw log exports from BC, yet those same politicians grant exemptions
to that ban in behind closed-door cabinet meetings. For some reason,
those decisions don’t quite make the so-called “Open Cabinet
Meetings.”
The BC Liberals have presided over the largest
raw log exports on record. In 2002 they allowed the export of 3.7
million cubic metres, or 100,000 full truckloads. This could run
6 sawmills and employ almost 4000 people.
The government is only supposed to approve raw
log exports that are “surplus” to local need. But, those
in the industry know better than to bid on each other’s raw
log proposals and risk being blackballed. In fact, Rick Doman, one
of BC’s largest operators, told a public meeting that his
competitor TimberWest had him sign an agreement to not bid on their
raw log exports even though his mills are critically short of fibre.
