British Columbia’s forest sector does need to be revitalized and change is therefore necessary. But, giving more power to corporations to short-change communities is exactly the opposite direction of where we need to go.

A comprehensive approach is needed, but foremost must be two things:

  • A truly enforceable control of raw log exports. The discretion of cabinet to approve raw log exports in spite of the so-called “ban” must be ended. The raw log export ban must also be extended to private lands in BC.

  • Tenure reallocation for community managed forests. The only long-term solutions that can benefit communities are if the government offers large-scale tenure of our forest land-base to communities with viable business plans who are prepared to manage them. We believe that 50% of BC’s forest tenures should be reallocated to communities. The Liberal governments current 20% reallocation is not for communities, nor is it enough to address the corporate stranglehold over BC’s forests.
